Natasha was loving her new apartment. It was large and open. It had the most amazing view of the skyline as well. New York was a beautiful city at night. Natasha stood and stared out the window. She wondered which of these apartment buildings near hers Nathan lived in. She felt alone in this big open space, and the thought of him kept creeping up on her. She stared out the window for hours, thinking and dreaming of him, wondering what she had gotten herself into. Suddenly she jumped, reached for the silenced Beretta in her coat, but then she realized it was just a knock at her door. The hour was already midnight, and she wondered who could be calling at such a late hour. She kept her hand on the silenced Beretta for safety. She looked through the eye hole, and saw two men in black suits. She did not recognize either of them. Natasha didn't want to open the door out of fear that these men were up to no good. She stood behind the door and thought through a plan of escape. She had only briefly looked around the apartment, but she noticed a ceiling vent in one of the closets. Natasha slowly made her way too it, it wasn't far from the door, she went as slowly as possible, when she heard a voice say, "Open up! We know your in there!" it was a deep and menacing voice. It put fear into her as she tried to use the shelves as a ladder to reach the vent in the ceiling.
Just in the nick of time she reached it and pulled herself up and through as the perpetrators kicked the door open. Natasha closed the vent and began to quietly crawl. She followed the vent, until she reached another opening in another room. By calculating the distance she realized she had gone far enough to be out of sight of the perpetrators. She opened the vent, jump down, and landed like a cat in another apartment that was much like her own. She figured she was a floor below for she had felt the incline of the vent go down. She quietly replaced the vent and silently made her way through the apartment, she was going to use the door, then she noticed a fire escape exit off this apartment. She slipped through the window, quietly shutting it behind her. She quietly made her way down the fire escape, she was happy she had decided to wear boot instead of heels, and the black that she had worn, concealed her in the shadows.
Once she was down the fire escape she made her way out into the street and waved a cab. She didn't know where to go, she didn't know were Nathan lived. She had her phone, but Nathan didn't give her his number because he didn't like phones. Natasha hoped in the cab. "Where to?" the driver asked in a familiar voice. Natasha found her heart pounding she couldn't think of anywhere and the adrenaline was coursing through her veins, nothing was coming to mind. "Drive a few blocks down," replied Natasha, "That should be far enough."
"Stopping at my place are we?" asked the Driver looking at Natasha through the mirror. Natasha looked up and saw him as the car started moving. It was Nathan. "What? Why? How? You..." replied Natasha started and feeling the rush.
"It was a test, and congratulations, you passed," replied Nathan.
"You sent those men?" asked Natasha.
"Actually my boss did, he wanted to see how you reacted in a situation like that," replied Nathan. "You did marvelous, especially since you haven't had any formal training."
"I watch a lot of spy shows," shrugged Natasha. Nathan let out a chuckle.
"Well now you are living one. To my place then? I'm sure you don't want to be in that big apartment alone now do you?" smiled Nathan.
"I don't think I can, I won't sleep a wink," replied Natasha earnestly the adrenaline still flowed through her veins.
"Don't worry nothing will get you while I'm around," stated Nathan with a smile. He remembered his first test. He didn't have someone to comfort him, but he knew how she felt, and he was going to comfort her. She was tough, Nathan would give her that, but she was a woman after all, and he knew she would feel better if she was in his arms.
They reached Nathan's apartment. He parked the car around back, and led Natasha up the stairs and to his room and said, "You can have the bed and I'll take the couch. You won't be too lonely will you in that big bed by yourself?"
"I don't know I guess I know to find you if I need you," smiled Natasha as she made her way into the bedroom. Nathan laid down and stared at the ceiling hoping for sleep, but he couldn't find it. It was just out of his reach, the thought of Natasha kept it there.
Nathan found no sleep, he heard the clock tick one, two, and three. He stared at the ceiling thinking about Natasha. What it was about her that kept her on his mind, he did not know. He was lost in the thought of her. It was eating at his mind that he could not be around her every moment, that he could not be with her now. She had had a long night and he had granted her the chance to rest. He did not want to disturb her. It was hard, but he had to fight every muscle to wake her, then hold her, and protect her from all the terrible things in the world. He thought about how odd it was he was getting her into a job full of danger, yet at this moment all he wanted to do was protect her.
Natasha laid in the big bed, all alone for hours. She was tempted to go in the living area and curl up next to Nathan, but she was afraid he was resting and she did not want to disturb him. He needed his rest, he had busy days, who knew what his job held next, and she did not want to be the reason for him to get hurt. Nathan getting hurt would hurt Natasha's heart in return. At about three thirty in the morning she couldn't fight it any longer, she walked out of the big bedroom and into the living area. She made her way to the kitchen as though she was looking for something to drink. Nathan had heard her though and met her in the hallway. Though it was dark his hands found her easily and Natasha kissed him passionately. Though the eyes could not see, love could find its way in the dark. Together is how the spend the remainder of this sleepless night.
